Three groups to the Greenroom

After two weeks away from Cornwall, I was eager to get back out with the OGIL, especially with the weather finally allowing me to get my ‘legs out’ for the first time in 2025.
The Union Corner crowd (seven riders) were raring to go, joined by John, a new addition to the ride, astride a fantastic-looking Harry Quinn. We set off in two groups (just for the Chairman) and made our way to the New TOP, where we met a gang of four who suggested a ride to the Greenroom at St Agnes via the usual route—whatever that is! Phil and Ruth briefly joined us on their clandestine mission to check out the Audax route (6th of April—get your entries in!).

Setting off in 11 groups (again, just for the Chairman), we picked up Simon at the bottom of Halvasso, where he was quizzed about his knowledge of the new meeting point. A bit of stop-start riding up the hill (thanks to traffic), and Mike C left us for another mission before we regrouped at the Quarry.

For security reasons—and to avoid our whereabouts being ‘outed’ on Signal—we split into two groups, each taking different routes. Navigating safely to Crane Garage, we then pottered through Stithians, Burncoose, Twelveheads, and a few other scenic spots before arriving at the Greenroom at 11 o’clock, having covered 24 miles. The benefits of posting the destination were once again evident when Martyn arrived, having led his own group via a third and even more secret route!

Paula had turned back earlier, suffering from some ‘front mudguard rub’ (which sounds like a painful condition), leaving Fred, Sarah, Phil S, Steve and Simon to join the Corporal, John, Martyn, Dave, Paul, and Danny, who had already ordered and were deep into another discussion about hearing aids.

Refuelled by the ever-helpful staff, excellent service, and great food and coffee at the Greenroom, we set off for home in one group. With no concern for secrecy this time, we followed the tried-and-tested route through Scorrier, Sandy Lane, Stithians, the Quarry, and even stopped for a visit to the Donkeys! There was a brief moment of worry approaching Longdowns when no one could recall the last time they’d seen Paul. Just as we were deciding who to blame for his disappearance, he rode up behind us.
A final split at the end of Argal Farm Lane saw the remaining five of us returning to Union Corner.

Another successful OGIL ride—great weather, good company, and smooth group riding. 44 miles, 3,458 ft of climbing, and an 11.5 mph average for me. D
