Suffolk Wolf Way Cycle Trip – April ‘25

We planned to ride the Wolf Way after seeing an article in the Cycling Uk magazine last year – I come from Suffolk so I wanted to go back home and re-visit all the old haunts from my childhood and we had my niece’s wedding to go to on the 18th of April too.

It’s a 270 mile route which took us 6 days to complete with a total ascent of 7852 feet so easy cycling compared to Cornwall!

We followed the route starting from Bury St Edmund’s where my brother lives so could leave the van there – from there we had a long 1st day of 71 miles to Ipswich then two shorter days via Felixstowe to Woodbridge and on up the coast to Dunwich – my favourite day as we went via Aldeburgh and Minsmere RSPB reserve for Tom to go birdwatching and on to stay in Dunwich which used to be a large city/ port until the 1287 when it was washed away by the sea!

Then up through Lowestoft and just over the border in to Norfolk where we stayed in Beccles – an old market town – 44 miles- then still in Norfolk- to Thetford- a lovely 55 mile ride through country lanes and villages.

The last day was a nice short day of 26 miles back to Bury but with a lot of off-road trails through King’s forest – heading into town for celebratory lunch in the beautiful Abbey Gardens in the sunshine ☀️ and a meal out with family in the evening with some good Suffolk Ale !

A really good tour of Suffolk and we were so lucky to have six sunny days ! I’d recommend a gravel or mountain bike for the off road sections – approx 25% – We booked accommodation in Premier Inns and pubs and one Air B&B – followed the route advised from Saddle Skedaddle web site and used Komoot to navigate – a Godsend!

I also bought a Suffolk cycling map if anyone wants to borrow it 👍🚲
