Remembering Don Gunner

Don Gunner (left) passed away on Tuesday the 17th of February 2026 aged 88 years.
Don was one of the founder members of Falmouth Wheelers Cycle club he was known for his relaxed riding style and cheerful disposition always ready to encourage new members and enjoyed showing members how to maintain their bikes. He enjoyed touring with the club and often said the club tours reminded him of his time in the army. Don was the first club treasurer, a post he held for ten years. When he stopped riding due to health issues he became the first club president.
Don was one of the kindest and warmest individuals you could hope to meet.
Here are some more tributes from the membership:

Great memories of riding with Don in the early days of the Club. He always had time to encourage and give advice to new members.
RIP Don🚴🏽‍♂️ SL

I second that. He was always encouraging me when I started, a true gentleman. Sad to hear this news. TT

Very sad news. On my first ride with the Wheelers I was chaperoned by Don back in 2011 and I couldn’t believe he was 75 or 76 at the time and still riding a bike! One of the originals and will be missed 😢 IM

So sorry to hear this news. Don was such a lovely man and will be missed by so many. On our rides he’d help anyone who needed encouragement or advice. A legend in his own time who opened up the small lanes of Cornwall for us all. May his work live on. RS

Sad news, Don was certainly one of the good guys. Enjoyed his company both riding and Marshaling. DS

Oh very very sad he was a great mentor FP

Happy days!
An Equinox ride from 2012, Don is second from the left.
A wonderful guy, we will miss him greatly PS

My first ride with the Wheelers, when I was 65 was to Stithians with Denise. I walked up Halvasso hill. The next week I went to Perranporth with the main ride. As I walked up St Georges hill on way back, Don pedalled along beside me, telling me what I was doing wrong. He was 10 years older than me. Missed and not forgotten, Don. DE

A true legend, a sad loss. AH

A fit looking Mr Gunner at the start of a 100km audax from Connor Downs in 2012, with ‘Lance’ and George Need. A sad loss. It would be good to see a tribute to his cycling life. SJ

Had some wonderful rides with Don and going to France with him he will truly be missed. Don gave me a cutting of a Christmas cactus and this is the first year I really got lots of buds and flower on it. DB

A lovely man – so kind and with a great understated sense of humour. Will always remember his grin as he told us he had geared his bike down at the start of his very hilly Bodmin Moor pathfinder. MA

Been thinking of Mr Gunner ever since I learned of the sad news.
2 days driving across Spain gives you lots of time to remember.
Don had a long life and well lived.
He was a gentleman and I will miss a good friend. RM
